My Story
What is the Virginia Black Dance Festival?
Founded by LaWanda S. Raines, Virginia Black Dance Festival will provide community building and networking opportunities for members of the Black, Indigenous, and Afro Latina dance community in Virginia.
With workshops, panel discussions and performances that highlight the diversity of dance genres cultivated as part of Black Dance culture in the diaspora, it will honor the traditions of multigenerational dance performance and practice.
Our FIRST EVER Festival was held on-site at Dogtown Dance Theatre, with limited capacity, and VIRTUALLY on March 20, 2021 from 9am-4:30pm.
After the shut down and sale of Dogtown Dance Theatre, the Boost Grant from the Community Foundation was moved to Virginia State University. This allowed the festival to be supported by the facilities at Virginia State University and providing access to the community in Petersburg, VA through both VSU and Appomattox Regional Governor's School. Where it will be hosted February 2-4, 2024.
Who is Virginia Black Dance Festival for?
VBDF exists to elevate the voices and talents of Black and Latinx members of the Virginia Dance community. With Black leadership and a diverse faculty and community of BIPOC artists at the forefront, VBDF will provide programming for ALL dancers and artists while building up a widely disconnected and underserved community.
